How to get a glossy finish when casting in a silicone mold?

We occasionally get questions like this:

Do you have a silicone casting compound that gives a smooth/glossy/mirror finish?
I'm going to cast figures out of epoxy, but I don't want them to have a matte finish.

Here's how to get the finish you want when making your own silicone mold!

All silicones actually give a smooth/glossy/mirror finish, and they can also give a matte finish, and almost any finish you want. This means that it is not the silicone that determines, but the original.
How does it fit together?
Our casting silicones have very good surface reproduction. This means that they give exactly the same finish as the original that you are casting from. If what you are going to make a copy of is glossy, then the mold will be glossy, and therefore the part that is cast in the mold will also be glossy. If what you are going to copy is matte, then the finish in the mold will be matte, and therefore the copy will also be matte.
This means that if you want a glossy finish, you must polish the original until it has the same finish you want on the final product before making the silicone mold.
