One of the world's most recommended knife steels, suitable for everything from small pocket knives to large swords, this is one of the toughest steels we know that is suitable for simple hardening. If you can't harden the steel, see our pre-hardened knife steel 80crv2. (Perfect for just grinding the steel to a finished blade, so-called stock removal)
The steel is well suited for forging but also stock removal/grinding as the alloy gives a less brittle result compared to e.g. O1 carbon steel. This steel can withstand a punch!
80crv2 is a steel used by knife makers all over the world when they want something that is sharp and strong. The Winkler Belt Knife is a knife that is made for tough use in demanding conditions, and of course 80crv2 is used in this one.

Example of curing procedure:
- Hold at 850 degrees for 5-15 min
- Cool in oil, such as rapeseed oil.
- 200C in the oven 2 hours, cool in air to room temperature
- 200C in the oven for 2 more hours.
The designation Sort, for example 1st Sort and 2nd Sort means Sorting. It indicates how bent the piece of steel is. For example, 1st sorting has a bend of less than 1mm per meter , and is therefore more or less flat. If you need something flatter than 1st Sorting, you have to buy flat-ground steel, 2nd grade has from 1mm up to 4mm bend and 3rd grade has 4mm or more. In other words, 1st grade is the flattest pieces of that type, and 3rd grade is the one with the most bend. The bend comes from the steel being stored on large rolls before being unrolled and cut into smaller pieces, some bend can also come from when the steel is cut.
